Giles is a self employed Theatre Consultant with 36 years of practical theatre experience behind him.

Having entered professional theatre at Manchester's Royal Exchange Theatre in 1977, and then trained in Stage Management at LAMDA, Giles worked until 2011 as Senior Consultant (Stage Engineering) for Charcoalblue on prestigious projects such as the National Theatre, Liverpool Everyman and many others.

Previously, Giles was Principal Designer at Steeldeck, designing stages, stage engineering systems and auditoria for theatres in the UK and USA.

    Giles has invented many other products now in use in theatre, including Easy-Out decks, BabyPack retractable studio seating, many of which are Patented internationally.

    Twelve years as Production Manager at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art was spent training hundreds of technicians and stage managers, with several years spent as Clients Project Manager under Lord Attenborough, managing the design and build of the new Academy in Gower St.

    Giles also taught Stage Engineering at the Academy, as well as introducing some ground-breaking lift technology in RADA's Vanbrugh Theatre, which now features a unique moving auditorium floor.

    Previous work has included Technical Manager at London's Dominion Theatre, Production manager for LAMDA, and Stage Management in various theatres around the North West and North East.

    Being a practical engineer, as well as merely working 'on the drawing-board' has its advantages - Giles also designs and builds half-size steam engines for a hobby, having previously been a Driver on full size steam locomotives! Relaxation usually comes on the River Thames.....

    Clients have included English Heritage; The Tobacco Factory Theatre; The Royal National Theatre; Stratford ArtsHouse and The Royal Albert Hall; - designing new products and constantly developing new ideas in the fields of Theatre and engineering.
